Yesterday, I was on the phone with a friend and she was telling me about how things in her life have been overwhelming. It’s to the point where a minor thing changes in her day and throws everything off – her mood, her schedule.
She’s recently returned to school and there’s a classmate who is incredibly disruptive to the class.
You know that person? The one who walks in and the energy gets sucked out of the room. A lively atmosphere goes flat? It’s like a human dementor. For any of you non-Harry Potter watchers, those are creatures that suck souls out of humans. Ok, so I’m being a little melodramatic, but you get the picture. Either way, when you’ve had a run-in with a dementor, it’s imperative to eat some chocolate to feel better. The same can be said for these kinds of people.
Everywhere we go, we’re affected by other people’s energy.
If you’re a sensitive and an empath, you can be a sponge for everyone else’s emotions and bad days (and good ones, too, but it’s the other side of the coin that seems to cause the most issues).
I’ve spent years figuring out what are my emotions and what aren’t as I go through my day. I’ll be feeling great and then have a flash of anger. Was that mine? Or was I too open and picked up the anger of the woman I walked by who is having a terrible day?
Does this sound like you?
If so, then you know how much other people’s emotions can be even more impactful when you’re stressed, overtired, under the weather… if you’re not in an optimal place, this can be like a wrecking ball to your day.
So back to my friend and her dementor classmate…
Somehow, this person always finds a way to be RIGHT next to her. Now, my friend is one of those generous-hearted people who always wants to help if she can. But she’s realized that she can’t help everyone. And she certainly doesn’t have the energy to help those who won’t first help themselves.
From my perspective, some people just want to suck on good energy and not really do anything to change. I call those people energy vampires.
So how do you get rid of the effects of an energy vampire or the type of bad mood or fear that seems to get stuck in your skin from another person?
Clear, clear, clear.
I was talking about this recently with a coach of mine and she reminded me of the importance of clearing energy.
What is clearing?
It’s an incredibly effective technique to feel better and ensure that anything that’s not yours gets out of your space.
My friend’s clearing technique is to acknowledge what’s not hers.
Over and over again, she’ll say (aloud or to herself), “return to sender, return to sender, return to sender.”
I can picture her in my mind, stamping letters and pushing them off to the side. That’s not mine. That’s not mine.
NOTE: adding in a physical motion can help a LOT to feel like the energy has moved out of your space.
I like to take energetic shits. I’ll seriously stand up and pretend I’m pooping out all the energetic ick and imagine it disappearing. It’s hilarious and that alone can have me feeling better.
Here’s a few other things that you can do:
- Put on a great song and dance
- Jump rope
- Take a shower
- Spin around in circles
As much as you can do something physical to move the energy, the better.
Here’s a few more things that you can do:
- Ride a bike
- Stand on your head
- Hula hoop
- Run around your neighborhood
- Shake it off
The bottom line is becoming aware that your energy has shifted and doing something to get YOU back to you.
Explore what works best for you. Some people like jumping on trampolines. Other people like clearing their physical space with sage and a prayer. It really isn’t about what works for me. It’s about you taking action and exploring the approach that works for you.
How do you feel after you clear your energy? How does your body feel? What changes?
One final note: when we’ve picked up other people’s energy, it can make it difficult to make clear decisions for ourselves. If you’re feeling wishy washy about something, clear your energy and come back to it. Does that help?
Not only will clearing help you feel better, it will also help you approach your life from a more grounded place.
